Pipeline Simulation Logo

Surge and dynamic operations are the most common cause of problems in pipeline systems. Surge and transients cause pipe rupture, leaks, noise, odour, contamination and equipment damage. Our consultancy expertise and our software technology can analyse the problems and recommend solutions at design stage or even when the system is operating.

Because surge and transients cause so many problems, we have developed our services so that we can actively identify and mitigate risks at all stages of a system’s life, from bid, through conceptual/optioneering, detailed design and into operations. We call this process Performance Delivery.

In a mature industry it is important to address operating systems and so key services have been developed for existing assets (such as site testing and performance analysis services).

Equipment damage due to surge

The two main techniques that we use are surge analysis and dynamic simulation. Surge pressures occur whenever the flowrate is increased or reduced, but are usually most severe during start-up and shutdown. High and low surge pressures can occur and these pressure are normally the highest and lowest ever experienced in the system and so are the design case for the design pressure, the thrust blocks air valve selection and frequently contamination issues.

Controls, variable speed drives, pressure reducing valves are a few examples of equipment that only operates during transient conditions such as start-up and shutdown and so these can only be studied and specified by using dynamic simulation technology.

Simulation technology is now being used to improve efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint.
